NUS responds to report on students in the community

The National Union of Students have a news story / comment on the recent report on studentification.

NUS is pleased to see a report which goes some way to acknowledge the positive contributions students make to local communities like volunteering, mentoring in local schools.

The Observer are running a story about a housing development in Loughborough which is having conditions put in place to ban students from living there. Loughborough Uni’s students’ union and the NUS are campaigning to have the conditions overturned.

A long-awaited report by studentification expert, Dr Darren Smith, was released today. ’Studentification’: a guide to opportunities, challenges and practice was commissioned by Universities UK, and is available to download or purchase from the “bookshop” section of their site.

Brighton Uni’s staff magazine is running a story on students being at home in local communities.

Recent research by Dr Darren Smith and Dr Louise Holt shows that University of Brighton students feel no need to live in specific student areas to acquire a student identity. They are ‘at home’ with other social groups and look beyond student-oriented services and facilities for their shopping and entertainment.
